RAC Pres said...

Hello Rotaract of Metro Surigao. I just dropped by to update you on the DISTAS '08 held at Tagum City. I am Pres. Cherrie Amor from RAC of De La Salle John Bosco College and we're in our charter year. I just dropped by to update you on the DISTAS '08 held at Molave Hotel, Tagum City last August 2-3. Since I am the only one from Surigao who attended the DISTAS, I felt it was my duty to give a re-echo on this.

When we formally started the program, it was already 9:30 A.M. We started late because during registration, we exceeded the expected number of interactors / rotaractors participants who also brought with them their other members since it is their host district. The program was called to order by DRR Mark Ryan Alquiza, followed by the singing of the Doxology by Rtr. Edralin Marzon and the National Anthem by Jessam Mae Pondoc, which was both sung with the most heavenly voices in which you will be amazed if you hear it. A opening remark was given by the Pres. Ronald Elkin Lao, president of Rotaract Club of Tagum North-UM Tagum Chapter, one of the host clubs; followed by a welcome message by AG Conception Balunos of Zone 2D.

Past President Melissa Ann Tan induced the visiting guests and Rotarians. The guest speaker was introduced by DRC Arnold M.Nicolas; the president of Rotaract Club of Tagum North, the keynote address was given by another Rotarian since District Governor Pablito P. Parilla was not there to present it.

After that inspiring message from our district governor (which was read), we had our First Plenary / Session given to us by DRR Mark Alquiza which we were challenge to meet his Eight DDR Challenges for Rotaract Year 2008. Namely:

(1) Accomplish the Rotaract Preidential Citation.

- To qualify for the citation, Rotaract Clubs must complete at least three activities of the four avenues of service, one of which must be community service and another international service.

- The sponsoring Rotary Club must sign the presidential Citation Certification Form and must submit it to District Governor Billy Parilla not later than 1 April 2009.

(2) Membership increase of at least 10% by March 2009.

- To accomplish this challenge, new members must organize a community, club, vocational, or professional service activity for the club, zone or district.

- That activity must be certified by the club president of the sponsoring club.

(3) Achieve effective club function.

- Payment of Php. 1000.00 District dues by your sponsoring Rotary Club (mother club) om July 30, 2008 to DRR Mark Ryan Alquiza, Acct. No. 135-0501313, China Bank, Potrero Branch, Manila. Pls. indicate RAC Name and Sponsoring RC Name in the validated desposit slip and fax slip to 361-1859 or just email it to markarquiza@yahoo.com

-On time Submission of Quarterly Club Reports.(Email it to DRR Mark again & DSec Melay Tan @ melay_tan@yahoo.com or they also need the hard copy later.

-Conduct bimonthly meetings.
(Clubs must conduct regular meetings which also focus on membership development.)

(4) Undertake a project of R.I. Presidential challenge: health, literacy, water & environment, to focus on child mortality.

Example: Seminars or Projects on Sanitation, Immunization, Parent Education or NFE and skills training.

(5) Send delegate/s to Rotaract’socal and/or international activities (i.e. DISTAS, DISCON, APRRC…etc.)

He also discussed the the Rotaract Calendar of Events and Monthly Guide for Rotary Year 2008-2009. (You have to email me for that since its a bit long.)

After our session with DRR Mark, we had our lunch break and the second session was set at 1 P.M.Once the lunch break was past, we were reminded to return by some of the hotel staff. Even though the speaker, SAG Eliza Tay, a toastmaster and speech professor, was already there, we still started at one thirty. There was a bit of a problem with the laptop that our session was delayed for a bit. She begins her session by throwing balls at the audience (which I got one also). She’s emphasizing the idea of balls as “messages” and if no one is to catch it, then the message is useless. (Great motivation by the way; one sleepy person was unintentionally hit on his head.) The second plenary is about public speaking in which she asked us what is our mission, how to make a conscious decision and what is our focus point when we tell our story. She also emphasizes the need for 4 H’s in story-telling: It has to have a head (Does it make you think?), a heart (Does it touch your soul?), a humor (Does it make you laugh?) and it has to be heavy-duty (Is it profound?).

The third plenary was on Rotaract Protocol which was given by PAG Arleen SJ Aportadera. She was a very charming lady who discussed about how to arrange the seating arrangement according to rank or greet guests and Rotarians in the Rotaractor’s way.

After a brief announcement and adjournment from the DRR Mark, we went back to our rooms to change and practice our club presentations for the “Korean Night.” It is a sort of fellowship night while celebrating the new R.I. Pres. Dong Kurn "D.K." Lee who is a Korean. Everybody wore the latest Korean outfits just like in “My Girl.” We had a fellowship dinner first then we have the program which one of the highlights was the Mr. & Ms. Distas 2008 from different Rotakids/IAC/RAC Clubs of District 3860. The winners both came from Rotaract Club of MKD, a Japanese-Filipino school in Davao City. I guess they deserve the title because they look and act like genuine Koreans. We also had a Disco filled with live Retro music from the 70’s and 80’s and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. But the highlight of my stay there was when I received the award for Early Bird whereas I was given a certificate and a commemorative mug. But to be fair, everybody received their own mugs. That night was truly magical and makes you believe in their theme “Make Dreams Real.”

Morning came and while packing, the club presidents are called to a special meeting downstairs. The agenda was to create the First Mindanao Council of RAC Presidents,
in which I was voted Director of Community Service. I protested due to the distance we have to travel every time we have a quarterly meeting (in which we also have to pass the hardcopy of our clubs quaterly reports). But in return, during each council meeting, they were going to the farthest RAC clubs of which is Bislig City is second on the itinerary, (first is Tagum) followed by Digos, Gen.San and Davao City. The purpose of this council is for the giving of updates in the district level as weel as meeting every club president w/in this district. Therefore, all club presidents are invited when we have this meeting. So after the the meeting was adjourned, we had a farewell lunch given to us by the Rotary Club of Tagum North. After we said our goodbyes (and exchanged cell phone numbers), we finally make our way home.

If you have questions about this council of presidents or distas re-echo. Better email DRR MARK or Dist Sec Melay Tan. I think they can answer your inquires better than me. Thx for letting me post this important updates and hope this post will be helpful to our district especially those who will read this. (sorry for the long post!) See you in DLSJBC, Bislig on Oct. 26,2008 but first attend the first presidents' council meeting on sept.21 at Molave Hotel, Tagum City.
